Quantitative detection of canine herpesvirus viral load responsible for mortality during the neonatal period (5 days to 3 weeks), respiratory disorders, particularly in young animals (kennel cough syndrome / CIRD) as well as fertility disorders in breeding animals.

Test indication

  • Herpesvirosis diagnostic under different clinical forms.
  • Epidemiologic risk evaluation (viral circulation assessment in animal groups and carrier detection).

Diagnostic samples

  • Oropharyngeal, conjunctival and nasal cells (swab or cytobrush) in presence of respiratory disorders (possibility of analysis for the other kennel cough’s agents, attach EDTA blood and/or bronchoalveolar lavage liquid on dry tube).
  • Oropharyngeal and vaginal/ foreskin cells (swab or cytobrush) or sperm (dry tube) in case of reproductive disorders in adults to detect carriage.
  • Conjunctival and corneal cells (swab or cytobrush) in case of eye damages.
  • Post-mortem kidney, spleen, liver, lung (no formalin) in neonatal mortality.

Result interpretation

  • Negative result: absence of herpesvirus or quantity inferior to the limit of detection.
  • Positive result: compatible with herpesvirosis (high or very high viral load) or carriage/ excretion after reactivation of a latent virus (low viral load).
  • A recent or ongoing antibiotic treatment during the sample collection can modify the test sensitivity and/ or bacterial load.
